In this paper, we examine potential impact of discharge in Subglacial Lake Engelhardt, West Antarctica, on the stability of the Ross Ice Shelf around the grounding line by combining satellite altimetry and remote sensing images. According to satellite altimetry data from the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat; 2003–06), Subglacial Lake Engelhardt (SLE) discharged ca. 1.91 ± 0.04 km3 of water into the downstream region. The ice-surface record derived from ICESat (2006–09) and CryoSat-2 (2011–17) data shows that the lake gained ca. 2.09 ± 0.05 km3 of water during the refilling event following the drainage event, taking three times as much time to reach the previous water level before the discharge; the calculation demonstrates that water input from an upstream lake is unable to sustain water increase in SLE, indicating that the subglacial, hydrologic system and groundwater flow could have contributed to water increase in SLE via hydrologic networks. Satellite images captured surface depressions and crevasses at the drainage outlet point of hydrologic networks around the grounding line; satellite altimetry data show that the ice surface there is still depressing even though the subglacial discharge has finished, potentially reflecting the long-term impact of subglacial discharge on the stability of the immediate Ross Ice Shelf around the grounding line. Keywords: Antarctic subglacial lakes; water storage change; satellite altimetry; remote sensing; hydraulic potential method.

Geodetic measurements of the vertical crustal displacement collocated with absolute gravity changes provide a discriminatory measurement of present-day glacial changes, versus more deeply seated rock motions caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). At the East Antarctic station of Dumont d’Urville, we compare the displacements derived from continuous DORIS (1993.0– 2006.0) and Global Positioning System (GPS) (1999.0–2005.7) data, and observed changes in absolute gravity (2000–2006), with the predicted vertical displacement and change in gravity from GIA modelling. The geodetic results have mutual self-consistency, suggest station stability and provide upper bounds on both GIA and secular ice mass changes. The GIA models tend to predict amplitudes of rock motion larger than those observed, and we conclude that this part of Antarctica is probably experiencing a slight gain in ice mass, in contrast to West Antarctica.

The main purpose of the present paper is to estimate the orthometric height of the Global Positioning System (GPS)-station at Troll, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Located at approximately 1300 m above sea level Troll has been connected to the Geodetic Infrastructure forAntarctica (GIANT)-network, but it’s orthometric height remains undetermined. A local geoid has been determined based on gravity-, tidal- and GPS-observations and available gravity anomalies. Information about the ice-thickness has been included in the terrain model. Based on tidal measurements the mean sea level was determined in Jutulgryta, a rift zone in the Fimbulisen ice shelf. Several gravity- and GPS-stations were measured between the two points (Jutulgryta andTroll), a distance of approximately 100 km.

In the region of the Schirmacheroase (71 °S, 12°E) various geodetic and glaciological research activities have been carried out in the last decade. Several times three geodetic-glaciological traverses were undertaken to study ice velocity, accumulation and ablation, and ice surface height changes. Repeated ground surveys show a significant decrease in surface heights by about 15 cm/y for a large blue-ice area. This paper presents the first interferometrically derived ice velocity field of the inland ice close to the Schirmacheroase. The interferometric analysis of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is performed in combination with ground-based information. Since only ERS-1&2 tandem mission image couples are available for this region a digital elevation model (DEM) is used to remove the effect of topography. Ice velocities up to 100 m/y are proved interferometrically for this part of the inland ice.

The aim of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition was to carry out mapping, geological and glaciological investigations of the Kraul Mts. in western Queen Maud Land. The expedition received the assistance of the National Science Foundation in the provision of American equipment and arrangements for logistics. The six member expedition, equipped for 2 1/2 months of field operations was taken by LC-130 Hercules aircraft from McMurdo to the Kraul Mts. where on several sledge journeys, covering 800 km in all, the geology of the mountains was mapped, triangulations made and base measurements taken during Nov. 22, 1968 to Jan. 20, 1969. The geology of the Kraul Mts. is rather monotonous, consisting of amygdaloid basic-to-intermediate lavas in thick, nearly flat-lying beds. An ultrabasic olivine-rich intrusive is dominant in the westernmost part of the mountains. In the east, a small isolated outcrop con sisted of sedimentary rocks in a sequence of about 50 m, containing a fossil Glossopteris flora of Permian Age. All mountains were crossed by dolerite sills and dykes. During work in the mountains, animal and plant life were observed, and some samples were taken. Core drillings were taken at the ice shelf 70 km to the N, for comparison with main basic cores.
